I really enjoy living in Japan. I have a nice apartment, nice schedule, nice friends, nice town, nice paycheck, nice freedom, nice cats, nice holidays. But my job is insanely boring. Yes, at first it seems like a luxury to be paid to sit at your desk all day doing nothing, but after 2 years it starts to wear thin. And for someone whose self-validation comes primarily through achievement and personal success, especially academically (I'm not an academic anymore, oh woe), it's hard to do nothing when you know you're capable of doing a whole lot of something. I don't feel at all challenged, and that's very significant to me. But I don't want to leave the lovely little hole I've carved out for myself here, and I certainly don't want to lose the amazing friends and support I've gained.

People often ask me what I want to do career-wise, like in The Big Picture. I've always entertained a lot of possibilities in my mind, but somehow I can see myself becoming a big ol' drug peddler like my Dad. The world of pharmaceuticals is overworked, stressful and whoreish, but I can't help thinking that I'd really like that. I'll illustrate children's books when I'm a retired spinster living with all my cats. Before that I want to reside in a trendy second-floor apartment in town where my sister and I can sip expensive teas and prance about in our bathrobes to French swing music on Sunday mornings. Ah, dreams.
